3DSMAX tutorial for making complex tensile structures

In the field of architectural design, we can often see some large-scale sports-type stadium buildings, as well as the roofs of those buildings, often designed as a film structure. This article mainly introduces the method of making similar membrane structures, and takes the 3DSMAX software often used in 3D technology as an example.

1 Case study
We can see similar buildings in Figure 1.1 and Figure 1.2, with many membrane roofs. Then we mainly introduce the production method of Figure 1.1 below. First of all, we can see that the film of Figure 1.1 is composed of many small films, and usually there are some supporting or auxiliary structures to be built according to their rules. If the production experience is insufficient, a small piece will usually be used. A small piece of stitching will take a lot of time to make. The main method of this case is to use the patch deformation modifier, let this modifier replace the manual stitching, so that the computer can help us complete the process in a short time, which is the focus of this article.

2 film production
1. We need to use the patch deformation modifier to quickly make the film on Figure 1.1. First, we must first take the 2D curve to trace the outline of the entire film. First create a two-dimensional curve with only four control points in the top window, and turn the point into a corner point first, and adjust the position of the four points according to the plan.

Then return to the front window and move the four points along the Y-axis according to the profile to the two main steel structures that are connected to the film. Because the curve of the film and the curve of the steel structure are completely coincident, we can find this. The position of the film on the steel structure, after adjusting the point.

3. After the position of the four points on the section is determined, enter the top window to adjust the curved contour of the film according to the plan view.

4. Return to the front window and adjust the two arcs adjusted in the top window along the section. At the same time, ensure that the arc of the plane is not deformed, so the section can only move the Y axis and move to the line with the steel structure. It can be overlapped。

5. So through the four points we will trace the outer contour of the entire film, and then add a surface Surface modifier to the two-dimensional curve in the modified panel, create a good patch.

6. Create a Plane patch in the top window. The size can be similar to the outline size. It should be noted that the number of horizontal segments and the number of vertical segments are the same as the total number of films. It is 5 in the horizontal direction and 19 in the vertical direction, so we must also adjust the number of segments of the Plane patch to be the same.

7. According to the proportion of the patch, put a film made with a curved Surface modifier in the grid of a patch and copy it. After copying, add a Edit mesh editing patch modifier to the patch, then go to Attach to merge the films to make them an object, in order to add WSM modifiers to them in the next step, because this modifier Must be added to an object. After merging into one object, give them a double-sided material, as shown in Figure 1.9.

8. Then add the top piece deformation PatchDeform (WSM) modifier to the modified panel, pick up the entire stretched contour object made with the Surface modifier, and adjust the parameters.

9. However, due to the object made with this WSM modifier, the movement will be deformed, so it is enough to collapse the finished object, but we know that this WSM modifier, the default collapse command can not collapse it. So we can use the snapshot command in the array to copy a collapsed object, so that the object of the WSM modifier can be collapsed, and then the original object can be deleted. The snapshot panel is set.

This article introduces the process of making a film structure for large-scale sports venues. When making similar projects, you should pay attention to the following points: use the Surface modifier to make the film, and use the patch deformation PatchDeform (WSM) modifier to quickly make the profiled film structure, which greatly saves us one by one. time. However, it should be noted that this WSM modifier can only be added to an object, and this WSM modifier cannot collapse by default. We can use the snapshot command to collapse it.
